Effective Learning

Why we need effective learning…

While watching the 2022 Philippines presidential debate last night, I was reminded why effective learning is vital to our lives. The discussion centred around effective learning which is reliant on two factors: first, the teacher needs to have subject matter mastery, second, the learner needs to be interactive and be motivated for the learning. Reflecting on this made me consider how effective learning is hard to come by with a pandemic in action. My thoughts are that learning has been negatively affected.

In this time of the pandemic, it is evident that the advancement of technology plays a vital role, especially in learning. Educators can now explore the various teaching methods through online platforms, and learners can now learn in their most comfortable environment. However, even though workshops are done digitally, educators need to be more careful about what and how to teach learners as they do not have the luxury of the learners' presence within their grasp. Besides, most educators have already had trouble grabbing their learners’ full attention during a usual face-to-face workshop. What more would it be if learners were at their homes where distractions are more prevalent? Additionally, in the digital space, educators cannot discipline nor read body language and actions the learners are showing, thus giving them false information thinking they delivered the lessons correctly.

No matter what environment a learner has, teaching methods should always consider effective learning outcomes. Teaching with quality must be given the utmost priority. The second factor comes into play; we all know teachers know what they are teaching but are they using the right approach to motivate the learners?

Effective learning in the current age is compassionate for the new generation. Every learner has different learning styles, such as visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic learners. I have read the research that found 65% of the general population are visual learners, meaning they need to see information to retain it.

Visuals add a component to communication that written and verbal methods do not. It was suggested that people keep 80 % of what they see, compared to 20 % of what they read and only 10 % of what they hear. This is especially true in our fast-paced digital culture, where multi-tasking is the norm, and attention spans are short. From this idea, the different learning styles also affect a learner's motivation to learn, which can be linked to the educator's teaching method and mastery of the subject matter. If educators are trained to give good quality knowledge and information, perhaps effective learning motivation will be easily achieved.

This adversity has led us to a very nifty spot wherein educators have the chance to adapt and be flexible on how to deliver the knowledge to their learners, giving them the motivation, this era lacks. There are a lot of factors that could bring down the connection between prioritising the need for good enhancement for educators and the learning motivation of learners. But through mastery of the subject matter, educators will be guided to choose and apply a teaching method that will be effective for the learner’s motivation. This is the result of progress and advancement in the field of education. It opens many opportunities to explore and see the unending possibilities of sharing a quality education with every learner, even in this time of the pandemic. It also widens the capabilities and room for improvements for every educator. Through it all, it proves that learning can be expressed and gained in different ways.

For the economy to produce a well-educated learner, it is vital to prioritise and emphasise educators’ teaching quality and tools.
